In 1905, the Christiania Municipal Asylum opened the doors to its magnificent new facility at Dikemark in Asker, and that was just the beginning. Today, it is silence and decay that characterize the beautiful buildings of Dikemark Psychiatric Hospital, but for more than a hundred years after its opening, the site was bustling with activity. In this book, we take you on a journey through time, offering a unique glimpse into what it was like to be a patient or doctor, a farmer or kitchen assistant during different eras of the hospital’s history.

All the buildings here are now protected, and within their walls, beneath the peeling paint, lie stories of groundbreaking research achievements as well as tragic patient fates. We have tried to gather some of these stories to celebrate the significant impact the hospital and the people here have had on the local community, as well as on the history of psychiatry.
